A woman lives a dissatisfied life with her husband and daughter in Patnitop, a hill station. However, her life takes a turn when she begins an affair with her employer.

Anil and Tina are madly in love with each other. They argue fiercely but their love overcomes all arguments. Tina is from a rich family, Anil is from modest means. Whey they approach their respective families for approval for marriage, both families reject this. But Tina's grandfather, who has a modern outlook towards life, proposes a "trial marriage" for two months where they will have to live within Anil's meagre means. They can spend the day together but at nights Anil returns to his home. Both Anil and Tina agree to this, as they are confident their love will overcome any challenges along the way. Their families are sceptical but agree to the arrangement. As expected, a lot of challenges do come the way of both Anil and Tina during this "trial marriage". Do they survive these ? Or do the harsh realities of "married life" finally bring both of them back to their "practical" senses ?

Anand (Feroz Khan) is a London returned teacher who has sought employment in a local school in India. His co-teachers are Geeta (Asha Parekh), Girdharilal (Jankidas), Pandey (Asit Sen), Lalita (Lalita Kumari), and Principal (Brahm Bhardwaj). Anand's students, though fairly mature, lack sex education, and he discusses this at length with the other teachers and the Principal, and he is met with opposition. Anand is attracted to Geeta, but Geeta shows no interest in him. Several female students are attracted to Anand. Anand naively is openly friendly with all his students, however, Anand faces trouble when one of his female students becomes pregnant, and he is accused of raping her.

Vishal is a poet and lives a middle-class lifestyle with his widowed and wheelchair-bound mom. He is in love with Aruna, who works with a publishing company. Due to his forthrightness, Vishal is unable to keep a job, and Aruna attempts in vain to get him to work at her firm. Then she stops meeting him altogether, and a few days later he gets an invitation to attend her marriage with her boss, Anand Kumar Sahegal. This turn of events devastates Vishal to such an extent that he takes to alcohol, visits prostitutes, gambles, and hates all women especially Aruna. Vishal gains fame selling his poems to Ramu Makhichandani, but does not improve his lifestyle. Then one day a young woman named Sonia enters his life and both of them fall in love with each other.
